Queer Author Faces Backlash For Children’s Pride Book

On Wednesday, queer author Catherine Hernandez took to Buddies in Bad Times Theatre to read her new children’s book, M is for Moustache, which was the topic of controversy amongst parents and the school board. She gave a shoutout to this Torontoist article by Erica Lenti, who interviewed her for the piece.

From the article:

In the working draft of Catherine Hernandez’s ABC Pride children’s book, M is for Mustache, the letter Q, she wrote, stands for “Quiet Down, which [we] will never do.” So it comes as no surprise that the 37-year-old is speaking out against what she calls “blatant homophobia” following thwarted attempts to read the book this month at some Toronto public schools.

Toronto to Host Pride House for Pan Am Games

Following in the footsteps of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Toronto will host its very own PrideHouse for the upcoming Pan Am Games. We spoke to co-chair David Morris on what PrideHouse means for the LGBTQ community.

From the article:

David Morris, co-chair of the site, said he hopes PrideHouse Toronto will make the up-and-coming Pan Am/Parapan Games the most “LGBTQ-inclusive, multi-sport games in Canadian history.”

“The [focus of what we’re doing], the lens, is making everyone feel accepted and included, to be themselves while competing in sport,” he told Torontoist in an interview.

Scene: 2015 AIDS Candlelight Vigil

In a moving vigil, hundreds gathered to remember those who have died from AIDS.

From the article:

Hundreds gathered for the 24 names that were added to the memorial in 2015, and in a moving moment in the vigil, the audience was invited to shout the name of the person they were there for. Candles were passed around to an audience that included John Tory, Barbara Hall, and MP Carolyn Bennett. They attended as observers, however—the event spoke for itself.

CAMH Supports Bill 77 Despite Criticism of Controversial Gender Identity Clinic

Despite CAMH’s child and youth gender clinic, which has been widely denounced for its alleged use of conversion therapy on transgender youth, the health care centre is in support of Bill 77 and the move to ban conversion therapy.

From the article:

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health says it “welcome[s] the unanimous support for Bill 77,” an Ontario private members bill banning LGBTQ conversion therapy that became law this month, even in light of criticism of its child and youth gender identity clinic.
