Sound Advice: Allie, Ventanas, and Waleed

#ICYMI, a roundup of noteworthy musical happenings in the city some call The 6.

Allie’s progressive R&B sounds sweet: Toronto-based singer Allie has a sound that’s been described as progressive R&B and soul. After hitting us with debut EP Strange Creature back in 2013, she’s set to drop new material sometime this year. In the meantime, she’s at NXNE this year at the Red Bull Sound Select showcase (June 17) and it’s a show that shouldn’t go overlooked.

Ventanas are a melodic treat: With their second album, Arrelumbre, set to drop shortly, Toronto’s Ventanas will be at the Aga Khan Museum this Friday (June 5). With an “old meets new” sound that melds flamenco singing with Sephardic folk, the musical ensemble features unique musical arrangements and eclectic interpretations.

Waleed’s got the AfroBeat: Billed as “Africa’s first offshore music conference and festival,” African Music Week (AMW) makes its debut next week (June 9-13). The showcase event is the AfroBeat Festival at the Phoenix on June 12. Featured at the show will be Sudanese multi-instrumentalist and singer Waleed Abdulhamid, a highly active member in the Toronto music scene.
