Scene: 2015 AIDS Candlelight Vigil

In a moving vigil, hundreds gathered in an annual ceremony to remember the thousands of Torontonians who have passed away from HIV/AIDS.

WHERE: Barbara Hall Park, 519 Church Street

WHEN: Tuesday June 23, 9 p.m.-10 p.m.

WHAT: Since 1988, over 2700 names have been added to the Toronto AIDS memorial next to the 519 Community Centre. Begun as a temporary memorial by University of Toronto professor Michael Lynch, the installation was made permanent in 1993, with a design by architect Patrick Fahn. Every year, names are added to the pillars that surround the park to remember lost loved ones and to remember how they passed away.

Hundreds gathered for the 24 names that were added to the memorial in 2015, and in a moving moment in the vigil, the audience was invited to shout the name of the person they were there for. Candles were passed around to an audience that included John Tory, Barbara Hall, and MP Carolyn Bennett. They attended as observers, however—the event spoke for itself.
