- What happens when you don’t pay your employees? They get a little cheesed, that’s what. The Grilled Cheese, a popular (you guessed it) grilled cheese shop in the heart of Kensington Market, has temporarily shut down amid allegations of unpaid wages and shady business practices. According to Global News, who broke the story, the Ontario Ministry of Labour has confirmed an investigation into the case. We’d insert another cheese joke here, but we need to tread Caerphilly.
- The Toronto Police Department’s Emergency Task Force were called to a building at Jarvis and Isabella this morning after reports of what appeared to be a grenade placed behind a radiator. Several surrounding streets were closed off as a precaution as police scoured the area and found what was actually nothing more than just a replica.
- Councillors took to City Hall today to discuss Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell’s Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy, which aims to tackle inequality and lack of opportunity within the city. Councillors heard from numerous speakers including the Bread and Bricks Social Justice Group, which urged the city to support a living wage, and public transit advocacy group TTC Riders, who urged lower fares for low-income transit users. The strategy is centred on five themes and deals with housing stability, access to services, transportation, food access, quality jobs, and living wages.
