Sound Advice: Junia-T, Soul Motivators, D.O. Gibson

#ICYMI, a roundup of noteworthy musical happenings in the city some call The 6.

Junia T

Junia-T has summer on his mind: The underrated hip-hop artist dropped the strong Eye See You LP late last year and the new video for single “We Got This” now sees the light of day. Set in sunny Los Angeles, the summer-themed vibe delivers sonically with Jessie Reyez lending a hand on vocals and visually with cameos by local heads Rich Kidd and LordQuest.

Soul Motivators

The Soul Motivators got funk on rewind: The nine-piece Toronto soul-funk collective known as the Soul Motivators have a new album out called Free to Believe. The project has a retro-soul type of feel with a modern-minded sensibility. Signed to the Do Right! label, the funk revivalists manage to jam a throwback sound while still sounding fresh.

DO Gibson

D.O. on the grind: D.O. Gibson is probably the hardest working hip-hop artist in the city, and his new single and video “Missy Elliot” exemplifies his relentless grind. Billed as an homage, the song and video captures the steez of the innovative (and still very relevant) Elliot. The accomplished rapper (he held the Guinness world record for longest freestyle), author, and professional speaker is set to launch his latest LP (titled Duane Gibson) on May 26.
