BMO Field is nearing the end of its nine month-long, $120 million expansion, which includes 8,400 new seats, six new concession stands, three bars, and most importantly, more food options. The menu aims to reflect the ethnic diversity of Toronto while also focusing on the most important principle in sports: “handheld food that pairs well with beer.”
We made our way down to BMO Field for the unveiling of the menu so we can tell you what to expect this season—at least when it comes to food.
Chili Cheese Footlong Chili, cheddar cheese, and sour cream
As far as hot dogs go, this is a top shelf option. We preferred the butter chicken dog we tried at the last BMO Field menu unveiling, but this is a solid choice. Pro tip: use the foil wrapper to hold the hot dog in order to minimize spillage. We also don’t recommend putting it on your face, although we did because we’re serious journalists.
Apple BBQ Pulled Chicken Sandwich Apple bbq sauce, cabbage slaw
“Apple” is the first word in this sandwich’s name, and it’s the first distinct flavour you’ll taste. It’s a refreshing departure from a standard pulled pork sandwich you can get just about anywhere. This would be great paired with a cider…if BMO Field served ciders.
Classic Meatball Tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese
While the massive meatballs are a bit unwieldy to take a bite out of, they’re damn good. There’s nothing particularly exciting about this sandwich, but that’s ok. We guess it’s important to have at least a couple “safe” menu options for the less adventurous fans.
Steak Banh Mi Thinly sliced steak, soya glaze, Asian slaw, cilantro
This sandwich isn’t innovative or particularly eye catching—which is why it’s our number one sleeper pick. It is light yet filling, has well balanced flavours, and overall excellent execution.
Eggplant Parmigiana Crispy fried eggplant, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese
Ah yes, the requisite veggie option. Vegetarians will likely be pleased to see the size of this sandwich, as it’s far more substantial than the veggie samosas that we were introduced to at the previous BMO Field menu update.
Bombay Frites Bombay spiced beef, tandoori sauce, and red and green onion
All the new fries options are tasty, but the Bombay spiced beef and tandoori sauce of the Bombay Frites make it our top pick.
Beefy Brisket Frites Smoked brisket, beef gravy, and scallions
Beef and gravy is A++ great. However this might be better as a sandwich. Fries feel unnecessary.
Kim Chi and Pulled Chicken Frites Kim chi, sriracha mayo, pulled chicken, and scallions
If you don’t know you like Kim Chi, this might be the riskiest option as it’s the most unexpected flavour combination we experienced during the tasting. If you do like Kim Chi, you’ll probably wish you got more of it on the fries.
