Extra, Extra: Cherry Blossoms, a Jilly’s Update, and Sex Education Opposition

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • It’s that time of year, when you remember you still haven’t planned anything for Mother’s Day (shame on you), and the High Park cherry blossoms approach peak bloom. The best day to check out the sakura will be Wednesday, so feel free to prep your evening picnic and stroll the grounds. Or get really ambitious and go early to avoid the big crowds; it’s worth it.
  • In Jilly’s news, Urban Toronto has an update on the renovation of the former strip club that is undergoing a Gladstone-like renovation. The interior is being reinforced, and appended items like fire escapes and signage are being removed. Will these changes anger some people? Probably.
  • Some Toronto schools are half-empty this week, as parents have pulled their children from classrooms to protest the proposed sex education curriculum. One such parent is Khalid Mahmood, whose five children will not attend school this week. He spoke with Metro Morning today and outlined his moral objections to the curriculum, and argued that it is wrongly being implemented without consultation, and that kids will be worse off for it. It’s interesting insofar as it outlines where the opposition is coming from, and how closely held those views are.
