Toronto Gets Lagerfelded

The world-famous designer makes an appearance to kick off his new partnership with Freed Developments.

Publicity stunt or genius collaboration? That’s the question we asked ourselves as we waited for iconic fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld to make his appearance at Yonge and Eglinton last night to kick off his partnership with Freed Developments and CD Capital Developments on the new Art Shoppe Lofts + Condos.

Lagerfeld will be designing two residential spaces for the condo project at 2131 Yonge Street, which will feature a 28-storey tower on the north side of the property, giving way to a 12-storey mid-rise loft building to the south. The project is slated to be completed sometime in 2019.

Peter Freed, president of Freed Developments, and Jordan Dermer and Todd Cowan, managing partners of CD Capital Developments, were in tow for the event, which was also DJed by Leigh Lezark of the Misshapes.

The event was also notable for sparking the creation of the term “getting Lagerfelded,” which refers to being made to wait for two hours in increasingly chilly temperatures, for a party’s guest of honour to finally roll up in his SUV.

An earlier edition of this article mistakenly described Lagerfeld’s vehicle as a Fiat 500. 5:26 PM
