Sound Advice: Brendan Philip, Spek Won, and Laila Biala

#ICYMI, a roundup of noteworthy musical happenings in the city some call The 6.

Brendan Philip

Brendan Philip’s Got Soul: He’s been holding down underground R&B for a minute, and now Toronto’s Brendan Philip is set to drop his self-titled debut EP this May 12. Expect moody, atmospheric genre-bending soul with this one.

Spek Won
Spek Won is Sofa King Cool: Born Benjamin Nii Kpani Addy, the hip-hop artist better known as Spek Won will release his new project, the amusingly titled Sofa King Amazing on April 12. The album features a who’s who of the local scene, including Shi Wisdom, Ian Kamau, and Slakah the Beatchild. Spek Won, known for proudly repping his Ghanian heritage through rap vibes, has been consistently on his grind and the new project reflects his genre mastery and creative growth by way of introspective lyrics and soulful production.

Laila Biali
Laila Biala’s Got the Jazz: Local jazz artist Laila Biala’s new album, titled House of Many Rooms, comes out April 14. If you’re familiar with this jazz performer and musician, you know that her brand of contemporary jazz vibes is as polished as it is entrancing. This new record has a bit more of a pop feel this time out, but overall reflects her distinctive and trademark jazz sensibilities.
