In his first public address, new police chief Mark Saunders said he will not abolish the controversial police practice of carding. Saunders told the African Canadian Summit in North York that abolishing the practice would result in an increase in crime, and added, “If anyone thinks tomorrow’s a new day, it’s not.”

The CBC looked at where city council campaign contributions come from, and found that 21 per cent of donations come from outside the city. This includes 71 per cent of donors for Jim Karygiannis (Ward 39, Scarborough-Agincourt) and 53 per cent of donors for Giorgio Mammoliti (Ward 7, York West), the two councillors with the highest percentage of donors who live outside the city.

Minnesota Timberwolves swingman Andrew Wiggins will be named the NBA’s rookie of the year, according to the Associated Press. Averaging 16.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in his debut season, the Thornhill native will become the first Canadian to win the award.
