Extra, Extra: The Constant Gardiner, Draft Bill Blair, and “q”

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • The City and Waterfront Toronto released their environmental assessment about what to do with the easternmost portion of the Gardiner. The two most popular options are removal, and a so-called hybrid option that would see a similar route with some alterations. Removal to build a boulevard would cost $460 million, unlock $150 million in development potential, and would delay drivers three to five minutes. The hybrid option would cost $920 million, and delay drivers zero to three minutes. Fiscally conservative Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong (Ward 34, Don Valley East) immediately cast his support for the more expensive, car-friendly option.
  • Chief of Police Bill Blair has appeared on wanted posters, sort of. A “Draft Bill Blair” flyer has been making the rounds online that encourages him to represent the Liberals in Scarborough Southwest. The police chief leaves the force in the next few weeks.
  • On Monday, the CBC radio program Q enters a new era as Shad begins his hosting duties. In addition to the new host, there will be a slight change to the title of the program, which will re-brand from an uppercase “Q” to a lowercase “q.” We’re not sure if this will change general perception much, but we are fairly certain it will cause more anxiety among copy editors arguing about the style guide. Not cool, guys.
