Extra, Extra: York Classes Could Resume, a School Trustee Is Out, and Tower Renewal

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • York University TAs could be back as early as Wednesday if the latest tentative agreement is ratified by members of CUPE 3903. Tutorials and many classes have been shut down since March 3, leaving first-year keeners not knowing who to turn to for the attention they crave.
  • Did you ever forget something really important that made people be all “I wonder if that person should have that responsibility?” Then you should meet David Smith. The incumbent school trustee for Ward 19, Scarborough Centre had until Friday at 2:00 p.m. to file his campaign expenses. He didn’t, and so Smith no longer holds office. You hope this would be a straightforward and easy matter for someone who wants to be a trustee, and you might even forgive a newcomer for not knowing the procedure. Except Smith is not new to the board; he just didn’t do his homework.
  • One overlooked city issue since David Miller left office has been tower renewal. A new Spacing short film takes a look at how last year’s Jane Jacobs Award winners, Sabina Ali and Graeme Stewart, are transforming these towers in their own way. It may not command public attention in the same way as the latest transit fiasco, but it’s well worth a look.
