Extra, Extra: Peel School Board Lawsuit, Terror Suspect Faces Deportation, and a Property Tax Increase

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • Karen Thorndyke is suing the Peel District School Board for $16 million, for allegedly locking her son, who is autistic, in small “isolation rooms”—dubbed alternative learning spaces—as punishment. Thorndyke says that five different Mississauga and Brampton schools have applied this approach 2006, and hopes the lawsuit will convince the board to dump its policy of locking students into solitary spaces.
  • A man suspected to be involved in a plot to blow up the U.S. Consulate was arrested Monday and is being held in custody pending deportation following an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing today. Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney didn’t have much to say on the matter, except that “the RCMP has clearly indicated that this individual was willing to commit a terrorist act on Canadian soil.”
  • Finally, just in case you missed it, city council has approved a 2.75 per cent property tax increase. In case you’re wondering how it all went down, and what that means, we’ve been liveblogging the budget debate since yesterday and you can read it right here.
