Extra Extra: A Cat Guardian, a Weather Alert, and Prison Errors

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • If you ever stoop down to say hi to your friendly neighbourhood cats, you might have Helder Da Silva to thank. The self-described “true animal loverfeeds 35 feral cats a day before he goes into work, and he’s taken over 100 cats in to get fixed. He’s pretty much a cat superhero.
  • Environment Canada warns that while temperatures might remain above freezing for most of the weekend, things will take a turn for the worse on Sunday. A special weather statement was issued for southern Ontario, warning of strong winds and flurries for Sunday. The warning adds that travel will be difficult, so if you need an excuse to stay at home and binge-watch Friends on Netflix, there you go.
  • One might assume that holding inmates for the duration of their sentences is a basic part of prison management. Yet, in 98 cases between 2009 and 2013, Ontario prisoners were freed prematurely. According to a Toronto Star investigation, these incidents mostly occurred because of clerical errors, leading to the early release of some violent offenders. This is probably the kind of thing that warrants more double-checking.
