Extra, Extra: TTC Emergencies, Doug Ford’s Future, and Fortified Clubhouses
Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.
- So far this year, the yellow alarm strips on the subway have been activated a total of 2,677 times: more than two-thirds of those activations were unrelated to emergency situations. To make it clear that the strip should be pressed only in the case of a genuine emergency, the TTC has launched an information campaign—and it will be replacing “Passenger Assistance Alarm” decals with ones reading “Emergency Alarm.” If you want to know more about what constitutes a genuine emergency, or simply find TTC CEO Andy Byford and TCC spokesperson Brad Ross’s explanations of TTC policies extremely calming, watch the video above.
- Those of you hoping that the PC leadership race would offer another taste of Ford campaigning are in for a disappointment: former mayoral candidate and councillor Doug Ford announced today that while he loves politics, he will not be throwing his hat in the ring. But he indicated that his absence from the political scene will not be a permanent one. “I will not give up on running for office,” he said, adding, “At this point in my life, I’m just going to take a little break.”
- The Hells Angels will not be returning to their “fortified clubhouse” at 498 Eastern Avenue. The clubhouse was seized by the Crown in 2007, and today the Supreme Court of Canada announced that it’s not prepared to hear an appeal from the motorcycle enthusiasts. In related news, those looking to get their hands on an already-fortified clubhouse could soon be in luck.
