Extra, Extra: Ghomeshi Drops His Lawsuit, Narrowing Traffic Lanes, and “Windstorm Chaos”

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • Former Q host Jian Ghomeshi has dropped his $55-million lawsuit against the CBC. “The parties have reached a settlement; the lawsuit has been withdrawn but it still needs to be formalized through a court order,” said Chuck Thompson, spokesperson for the CBC. Under the terms of the settlement, Ghomeshi will have to reimburse the CBC for $18,000 in legal costs. The Toronto police are currently investigating allegations of sexual violence made against Ghomeshi: there has been no word from Ghomeshi since he said he would “meet these allegations directly.”
  • Toronto traffic lanes are poised to get a little narrower in the name of increased safety. It seems that when streets are more generous in terms of width, motorists have a tendency to drive faster: “The width of the lane often sends a signal to drivers about how much cushion they have and sort of informs their comfort level about how fast they’re willing to go,” explained Stephen Buckley, general manager of the City’s transportation services department. So over the next few years, lanes will be redrawn (making them between three and 4.3 metres), reducing that speed-inducing motoring cushion.
  • It was extremely windy in Toronto last night. If you were not able to fully appreciate how windy it was—because watching random pieces of garbage tossed about in the air from the comfort of your home was not illustration enough—you could always watch this instructive video entitled “Windstorm Chaos.”
