Extra, Extra: An Award-Winning Pedestrian Tunnel, the Award-Winning Corktown Commons, and the World-Class Museum Station

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • Construction on the pedestrian tunnel under the western gap to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is nearing completion. The tunnel’s opening date will be announced in the next few weeks. If you are not already sufficiently excited by this news, consider that “Last month, the Billy Bishop Airport Pedestrian Tunnel was awarded the 2014 Canadian Project of the Year by the Tunnelling Association of Canada.”
  • Toronto’s Corktown Commons has been honoured in the “green” category of Popular Science‘s 27th Annual Best of What’s New Awards. Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, the magazine writes, “took water recycling to an unprecedented degree” when designing the park. As one of the best new things, the Commons finds itself in the company of other eco-luminaries such as the Motiv Electric Powertrain Control System and a small, non-toxic box that stores surplus wind and solar energy.
  • Not to be outdone, Museum Station has also made a best-in-the-world list, appearing in the Guardian‘s roundup of “The world’s most beautiful metro stations.” As one of the world’s most beautiful metro stations, it finds itself in the company of other transit luminaries such as the Toledo subway station in Naples (which features what looks like a giant, luminous egg) and Westfriedhof subway station in Munich (which features what looks like a single overhead light).
