Duly Quoted: Education Minister Liz Sandals, on Governance Issues at the TDSB

Provincial government orders independent review of TDSB to address "ongoing concerns."

“The ongoing concerns at the TDSB are putting public confidence at risk—not just in Toronto but across the province. As minister, I have no choice but to act.”

—Education Minister Liz Sandals, explaining in a statement why the provincial government will be bringing in education consultant Margaret Wilson to undertake an independent review of the Toronto District School Board. The announcement follows months of growing tensions and controversy at the board. Relations between the director of education, Donna Quan, and a number of trustees have become strained, as the latter fault the board for a lack of transparency; Quan has been unwilling to provide a copy of her employment contract, making it impossible for trustees to review her performance in the role. And last week, it was reported that Quan had received a boost in pay from former TDSB chair Chris Bolton—despite the fact that provincial legislation makes her subject to a wage freeze.
