Extra, Extra: Doug Ford’s Ambitions, Electoral Maps, and Petition Supporting the Women Affected by Jian Ghomeshi

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.

  • Those of you mourning the end of the mayoral campaign will be glad to hear there might be another contest on the horizon involving one of the municipal election’s central figures. “I can honestly say I wouldn’t rule that out right now,” commented Doug Ford on the possibility of making a bid for the Ontario Conservative Party leadership. Some Tories appear to be welcoming the prospect, believing he’d have a “real shot” at winning—others are less enthusiastic: one source asked “Are you [deleted] kidding me?” and one member of the legislature said simply, “Doug Ford? Oh my God.”
  • Many good things can come out of elections—fresh political ideas, for example, and more enlightened leadership. And also maps. One of the great legacies each election leaves behind is a vast array of colourful, informative, and fiendishly detailed maps. Here, to more fully shape your sense of what the city just went through, are five more of them.
  • “You should know first that there are so many of us who believe you. We understand why you fear coming forward, and want to offer a counterbalance of public support and understanding.” So reads a petition now available online, which is addressed “to the women who have been directly affected by Jian Ghomeshi, and to those survivors of abuse and assault who fear being disbelieved.” It has already been signed by various members of the Canadian music, art, and literary worlds, including the band Fucked Up and authors Dionne Brand and Sheila Heti.
