TIFF 2014 Scenes: Friday and Saturday, Featuring St. Vincent and While We’re Young

Chris O'Dowd, Adam Sandler, Kevin Smith—these and other celebrities too lazy to dress properly.

Friday and Saturday are when the heavyweights come out for TIFF—the films that studios (if not yet the public) have deemed Official Oscar Contenders. Friday and Saturday are the nights of the Important Films: Bill Murray’s latest bid for a Best Actor statuette in St. Vincent; Tom Hardy’s crime drama, The Drop; ensemble dramas, such as Men, Women & Children, Nightcrawler, Boychoir, and While We’re Young, all from major directors; and James Franco’s adaptation of William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury.

Friday is also the night when comedies seeking some credibility for being About Stuff debut: hence the debuts of Top Five (it’s about being successful and black and the contradictions inherent in those two things!) and Welcome to Me (it’s about dealing with borderline personality disorder!). And also for some reason Tusk, Kevin Smith’s indie horror film about, well, a guy with tusks, debuted—because if there’s one thing Kevin Smith hates, it’s an established narrative.
