Extra, Extra: Spoofing Soknacki, TMZ Tackles Toronto, and Selling Harlequin

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • David Soknacki may be polling at 5 per cent, but the mayoral candidate has been winning the internet for a while now. Today, the interweb officially reached peak Soknacki when the politician’s meme-savviness earned him his very own deserves-to-be-viral parody video, included above. (And here’s Soknacki’s Footloose video, if you don’t already know what’s being parodied.)

  • Adult film star Nikki Benz is going to enter the mayoral race. What’s almost more interesting than this piece of news is where it can found: on TMZ, alongside items about Marc Anthony’s divorce and Nelly’s dating life. Even non–Rob Ford Toronto election news has now become American tabloid fodder.
  • It’s the end of a beautiful relationship; a long, storied romance is coming to a close. (And any other phrase that suggests both love and the end of an established association.) Harlequin and Torstar Corp. are parting ways after 39 years—Torstar sold the publishing company to News Corp for “$455 million in cash.” Does “in cash” actually mean in cash? Because $455 million in cash would be extremely heavy.
