Extra, Extra: Leafs Get a New President, Winter Is Coming (Back), and a Lunar Eclipse Is on Its Way

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have a new president: Mimico-born, Stanley Cup–winning, Olympic Gold medal–earning Brendan Shanahan. It’s possible that since he was a boy, he’s been dreaming of the day the words “takes over after Toronto misses playoffs for 8th time in 9 seasons” would be written about him.
  • “Winter battles again with spring, as temperatures go up and down like a roller coaster and strong winds blast across the regions today.” This is not a poem we wrote to explore our fear that spring will never really come or our other fear that we are trapped in a unremittingly bleak winter hellscape. This is, in fact, the first line of a Government of Canada special weather statement—which goes on to advise that an Arctic cold front is going to sweep across Southern Ontario, bringing with it snow and cold temperatures. But the special weather statement does not want you to despair: “Latest indications show winter’s Victory will be short-lived, as temperatures will moderate back up closer to normal by the end of the week.” We will almost certainly despair regardless, but it’s encouraging that whoever is writing special weather statements has both a poetic sensibility and a flair for dramatic capitalization.
  • We’re not sure whether or how the weather will affect your chances of seeing tonight’s full lunar eclipse, but isn’t it exciting that such a thing will be there and happening—even if you might not be able to see it because of the snow and the ice pellets and all the other weather awfulness headed our way?
