Duly Quoted: Julian Hitner, Wine Critic
Is $168,000 too much to pay for a really, really rare bottle of wine?
“This is not even the type of wine that most famous critics in the world would be able to taste…I’d personally rather spend that money on a down payment for a house.”
—Hitner was speaking to the Post about a $168,000 bottle of Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon, now on sale at the Summerhill LCBO. The wine comes in a handcrafted “ampoule”—only 12 of which were made—that can be opened only by technicians from the winery. A $26,000 bottle of Scotch was stolen from the Queens Quay LCBO earlier this year, but this wine is in no danger: the display bottle is a fake. The genuine article will be shipped from Australia to the buyer.
