—The idea of opening provincially funded clinics where Toronto’s intravenous drug users could shoot up under medical supervision got a ringing endorsement from the City’s board of health on July 10, but judging by these words from Ontario’s health minister’s press secretary, the province has no intention of lending its support. (The quote was in the Star.) Researchers have found that supervised injection sites can help mitigate some of the harmful public-health effects of drug use, but such programs remain controversial.
