  • We know Lee’s Palace as a divey concert venue with a burrito joint lodged in its facade, but once, long ago, it was a gorgeous movie palace, designed by an architect who went on to beautify Detroit during its heyday. Toronto Dreams has the photographic proof.
  • Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti (Ward 7, York West), known for his surreal antics and his knack for antagonizing colleagues, says his recent brain surgery (yes, really) has led him to reevaluate his life. “I make enemies, and I really don’t want to fight with people to that degree anymore. It’s time for me to change a little bit,” he said today, according to the Star.
  • Sun columnist Sue-Ann Levy has, somewhat surprisingly, come out strongly in favour of ranked-ballot voting in municipal elections. This is a method of polling that could very well have cost Sun-favourite Rob Ford the 2010 mayoral race.
  • Corriere Canadese, a local Italian-language newspaper that had been around for almost 60 years, announced that it will be suspending operations on Saturday. It wasn’t long ago that the Canadian Jewish News made a similar announcement. These are small outlets, but even so: news like this makes newspaper people nervous.
