MAGAZINE LAUNCH: Those who need something pithier than cash-counter magazines for their summer reading will be excited to hear that Descant is releasing its Summer 2012 issue, “Summer Subversions.” Staying far away from celebrity news and makeup tips, this mag is a compilation of edgy and thought-provoking art, fiction, poetry, and essays. In celebration of the launch, contributors Angela Hibbs, Mark Kingwell, Jimmy McInnes, and Kathryn Mockler will read selections of poetry and non-fiction. The Magpie (831 Dundas Street West), 7 p.m., FREE.

OUTDOOR CINEMA: Love movies but don’t want to waste our fleeting warm summer nights indoors? TIFF in the Park has a solution: outdoor film screenings. Every Wednesday, watch classic screwball comedies under the stars and the CN Tower. Every movie will kick off each night with a special light show. Tonight’s feature presentation is Ernst Lubitsch’s romantic comedy, Trouble in Paradise, starring Herbert Marshall, Kay Francis, and Miriam Hopkins. David Pecaut Square (55 John Street), 9:15 p.m., FREE.

LIVE MUSIC: As if a free Canada Day show at Harbourfront with Hidden Cameras wasn’t enough exposure for the week, vocalist Maggie MacDonald takes to the stage solo tonight. This playwright, responsible for rock opera Rat King, and lead lady of such bands as Betty Burke, Barcelona Pavilion, and Republic of Safety, will be joined by songstress Holly Andruchuk. Holy Oak Cafe (1214 Bloor Street West), 10 p.m., doors open at 8 p.m., show begins at 9 p.m., PWYC.

CORRECTION: June 27, 2012, 3:15 PM This post originally stated that tonight’s show by Maggie MacDonald and Holly Andruchuk at the Holy Oak Cafe would begin at 10 p.m. It is now scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.
