Extra, Extra: Adventures in Transportation

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.

  • Two weeks ago Toronto’s Lemon Bucket Orkestra grabbed international attention with the simple act of trying to pass the time during a flight delay. They broke out their instruments while on the tarmac at Pearson, and video of the musical interlude went viral. The band liked it so much, it seems, they repeated the experience on the trip home: the video above was shot in Bucharest today, when Lemon Bucket’s flight to Frankfurt, en route to Toronto, was delayed. They land at Pearson at 7:45 p.m. this evening—and yes, they’ll be playing again at the airport.
  • Toronto got its first bicycle station, in the York Street underpass near Union Station, back in 2009, and though it’s been a long wait, riders are happy to know that the second opened this morning, at Victoria Park subway station. The secure storage facilities allow riders to keep their bikes safe—users can pay a monthly rate or $2.15 per single use—and the plan is to build more (albeit very slowly); the next is scheduled to open at Finch station in 2013.

  • Google is doing its mapping thing again, this time with the help of trikes and trolleys, which will soon be wending their way through Kensington Market.
