Extra, Extra: Winter Woes, George Takei, and Bedbugs
Every weekday’s end, Extra, Extra collects just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.
- After the warmth we experienced early in the month, today’s cold, dreary weather is a little hard to take. But at least it’s not as bad as this billboard, spotted above the Gardiner Expressway Saturday evening, would lead us to believe.
- George Takei (best known for his role as Sulu on Star Trek, but also pretty well known just for being George Takei) celebrated his 75th birthday in Toronto over the weekend, while he was in town to receive an award from the local Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Is there a picture of him smiling next to a cake? Why, yes, there is. And here are some cookies that Wanda’s Pie in the Sky baked for the occasion.
- If you own a Shetland sheepdog, best not to take it for a walk in Richmond Hill. Up there, they hunt them with spears.
- Bad news for anyone who lives in terror of insects feasting on their blood (so, everyone): the province is probably not going to be renewing most of its funding for bedbug prevention and eradication in Toronto. City staff, in their report on the situation for next week’s meeting of Toronto’s Board of Health, have prepared a handy map of the parts of the city that give rise to the most bedbug complaints. The results will probably not surprise you. [PDF]
