Extra, Extra: Creepy Blanket, Fixing Info Pillars, and the TTC Wants You!

Every weekday’s end, Extra, Extra collects just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.

  • Just in time for the launch of Hot Docs tomorrow, the newly renovated and newly named Bloor Hot Docs Cinema got a shiny new sign today. Also: Hot Docs launches tomorrow! We have lots and lots of reviews, if you’re wondering what to see.
  • More in the sign department: Spacing revisits our no-good very bad sidwalk info pillars, and has a suggestion for improving them based on how they are handled in Vancouver.
  • Architects at the University of Toronto’s school of architecture have invented this kinda neat, kinda creepy blanket, which is 3D and talks to a computer. It knows when you are sleeping, it knows when you’re awake—and it knows when you overheat and can automatically turn the thermostat down.
  • Recently, city council decided to change the composition of the TTC board, expanding it to include so-called “citizen members.” If you think you might like the gig—’cause really, what could go wrong running the TTC?—you can sign up to receive notifications about the application process; applicants will be chosen this summer.
