Urban Planner: March 29, 2012

In today's Urban Planner: Susie Bright talks Big Death, Little Death; a spicy art exhibition gets its opening; test your inner bookworm with CBC's new book trivia night; and meet the neighbours at a big bash on Queen West.

Double Entendre, a naughty new art exhibition, opens tonight. Photo courtesy of Gavin MacDougall.

BOOK READING: As Women’s History Month comes to a close, don’t miss this book reading by American writer Susie Bright. Big Sex, Little Death is a memoir about Bright’s coming of age, that explores her sexual experiences as much as it does the sexual revolution in America. The discussion will be followed by a book signing. University College, Room 140 (15 King’s College Circle), 4–6 p.m., FREE.

ART: A lot can happen when you put a bunch of hormonally liberated art students together in the same room. For the results of such a venture, don’t miss the opening of Double Entendre, an erotic art exhibit from Centennial College fine art students. Latitude 44 Gallery (2900 Dundas Street West), 6–9 p.m., FREE.

BOOK TRIVIA: Though our public libraries may be inaccessible for the time being, there are still plenty of other ways to stretch your literary powers. CBC Books would like to invite you to its first-ever trivia night in Toronto—an event where you can prove you knew which classic book shares remarkable similarities with The Hunger Games. Teams or individuals are encouraged to sign up (there will also be participation by CBC personalities and notable authors). Watermark Irish Pub (207 Queens Quay West), 7–9 p.m., FREE (but bring a book to swap with fellow bookworms).

PARTY: Something we don’t do often enough—getting to know each other. West Queen Street West hopes to rectify that with an invitation to the West Queen West Meet Your Neighbourhood Party. Not only will you get a chance to check out the rarely-seen third floor salon of the Great Hall, but you’ll also get to drink cocktails with all the friendly neighbours before hitting the dance floor (with DJ collective Muscle and Heat). The Great Hall (1087 Queen Street West), 7 p.m.–1 a.m., FREE.
