Extra, Extra: Ice Rinks and Newspaper Hijinks

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.

  • Loblaws opened up in Maple Leaf Gardens not too long ago, but the legendary hockey and performance venue still has a bit more renovation to go. On a floor above the supermarket, Ryerson is installing a new ice rink. Earlier today, they released the above photo of the construction, still underway. That’s cement being spread across what will one day be the ice pad.
  • We missed this a couple days ago amid all the excitement at City Hall, but the scrappy upstarts at the Ryerson Eyeopener have put together a nice parody of The Grid. Possibly even better: The Grid’s response.
  • The NDP’s leadership convention is this weekend, and it’s not over until they’ve settled on a person to step into Jack Layton’s former role as party frontman. The CBC has a handy guide for those who might not be familiar with the details of the process.
  • If you haven’t seen the cover of today’s Toronto Sun, you might want to check it out. It’s rare to see the mood of a mayoralty so accurately captured in three words and a picture. Bravo.
