Urban Planner: February 6, 2012

In today's UP, a lecture on how technology and politics intersect and conflict; former governor general Michaëlle Jean lectures at Roy Thomson Hall; and chaotic comedy at the Smiling Buddha.

Former governor general of Canada Michaëlle Jean, seen here greeting well-wishers with her old boss in 2010, speaks tonight at Roy Thomson Hall. LECTURE: John Duffy, a public affairs consultant (and pivotal political adviser to the federal and provincial Liberals during better times for the party) will speak tonight about the connection between politics and technology, how each affects the other, and the degree of confluence between them, as part of the Literary Review of Canada‘s lecture series, in association with TVO’s Big Ideas. Gardiner Museum (111 Queen’s Park), 7 p.m., FREE.

LECTURE: As part of their 20th season, influential women’s lecture series Unique Voices brings a former governor general of Canada to town tonight. The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean is tonight’s speaker, and her address, coinciding with February’s Black History Month, should touch on her experiences as the highest ranking woman of African descent in Canadian history. Roy Thomson Hall (60 Simcoe Street), 7:30 p.m., $36.

COMEDY: We’ve written about quite a few shows at Comedy Bar of late—in fact, we had a feature this weekend on how their new cabaret room is attracting new and established talent—but there’s still plenty of interesting and experimental comedy taking place in other bars and backrooms across Toronto. Case in point: tonight’s Is This Happening?, a hybrid improv and sketch show whose headliners create a new improv format for every show. This month’s headlining guest act is Chaos House, featuring comics like Conor Holler, Evany Rosen, and Bob Banks. Smiling Buddha Bar (961 College Street), 8 p.m., PWYC.
