Toronto Public Library Workers’ Union Inches Closer to Work Stoppage
Negotiations between Toronto Public Library and the union that represents its workers are apparently not going well: earlier today, TPLWU Local 4948 announced that it had filed for a “no board” report, which brings TPL one step closer to a possible work stoppage. Now, the Ontario Ministry of Labour has to review the request and decide whether or not to issue the report. Once the ministry does issue the report, the parties have 17 days to negotiate before it becomes legal for either of them to walk away. The employer can lock out workers, or workers can strike. UPDATE, 12:46 PM And here’s the union’s press release. It says the move is to “spur negotiations,” and that things are currently at “an impasse.” And the kicker: “It’s been made clear that as the current contract talks deepen, the employer will seek to make the TPL rely even further on precarious part-time labour.”
