Scene: A Tibetan Vigil
WHERE: Nathan Phillips Square
WHEN: Wednesday, February 8
WHAT: A few hundred people gathered in front of City Hall as part of a global day of vigils to memorialize Tibetans who have died or been seriously injured as a result of self-immolation—a form of political protest against Chinese rule that has become increasingly common over the course of the past few years. The Tibet Post reports that 21 Tibetans have self-immolated since the beginning of 2011, one of them on Wednesday.
