Weekend Newsstand: January 21, 2012

WAKE UP! Just kidding, it's Saturday, you don't have to. Just kidding, you do, because otherwise how will you be a productive member of society? To help you get started, the news: the OPP gets involved in the infamous Ford vs. 911 debacle, the G20 saga continues, a Toronto building for sale with a hefty price tag, funding the war on bedbugs, and planes packed with pukers land in Pearson.

Once upon a time the army was brought in to save Toronto from a snow storm, and now it’s the OPP that’s here to clear up the shit storm surrounding the 911 calls Mayor Rob Ford made in October. Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Chris Lewis has reviewed the calls that Ford placed in response to This Hour Has 22 Minutes comedienne Mary Walsh’s unwanted appearance at his home, and says that Toronto police Chief Bill Blair’s statement about the content of the calls is “accurate.” Since the caller has to give consent to release to the public the content of 911 call recordings, we may never know just what Ford did say. However, if the itch to listen to a 911 recording is simply too much to bear, there’s always this guy.

Who’s getting justice in his G20 case? Noooooobody! (Ha! If you weren’t already thinking of former mayor Mel Lastman, now you are!) Actually, not Nobody. Because a six-month limitation period to order a tribunal has expired, the five police officers involved in G20 protestor Adam Nobody’s case will likely not be held accountable, even though a report from the province’s police complaints watchdog has ordered that the officers face disciplinary hearings. Ah, sweet, sweet, justice. The only thing more important is time limits.

Great news for real estate hunters with “vault in which to store gold bullion” on the must-have list! The Bank of Nova Scotia is looking to sell its financial district headquarters. If you have an extra billion dollars laying around, this could be the right time for you to get into the market, you know, with the low interest rates and all.

Are you feeling itchy this morning? In today’s skin crawling news, we learn that due to budget constraints, Toronto Public Health won’t be able to fund methods to help control Toronto’s bed bug problem and will be turning to the province for help. In the second half of last year there were nearly 1,000 cases reported, so the ongoing need to control the issue is evident. So…how ’bout now? Itchy yet?

Let’s add one more item to today’s gross-out news section (it is Saturday after all!). Dozens of travellers returning from Cuba fell ill on flights to Toronto (and Ottawa) this week. Symptoms included…wait, are you eating breakfast? Okay, we’ll just say it was gastrointestinal.
