Urban Planner: January 5, 2012
In this Urban Planner: Free film night at a public library, paint a friend for a global art project, a romantic matchmaker game takes over a local pub, and a play that charts the journey of a gay survivor of Nazi germany opens tonight.

A new play on the construction of homosexuality, Loving the Stranger, or How to Recognize an Invert, opens tonight. Photo courtesy of Alistair Newton.
FILM: Another year, another reason to love and appreciate your local public libraries. “Afternoon at the Movies: January Edition” is kicking off with a new classic every week. Today, check out Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. Barbara Frum Library (20 Covington Road). 2 p.m., FREE.
ART: Artists of the world unite! “FACE THE WORLD Global Paint Party” is a massive global art project that challenges you—and your inner painter—to come out and have fun with brushes. Bring a photo of a friend so you’ll have something to base your artwork upon. Or, if you’d rather not get your hands dirty, you can check out the exhibition that inspired all of this, “Friend Me PORTRAITS OF FACEBOOK.” Edward Day Gallery (952 Queen Street West). 5–9 p.m., FREE.
ROMANCE: The Flying Beaver is looking to play Cupid (did we really just type that?) at a game show event called “Match Fever & The Dating Game.” Wear green if you’re single and raring to go, or wear red if you’re just there to have fun. And if you’re feeling especially adventurous, volunteer as a contestant in the dating game! The Flying Beaver Pubaret (488 Parliament Street). 7 p.m., $10 advance, $15 at door.
THEATRE: “Loving the Stranger, or How to Recognize an Invert” is a new musical that tells the story of Peter Flinsch, a Montreal theatre designer and WWII survivor, who was arrested for kissing a friend at a Christmas party in 1942. The show was first produced for the 2010 SummerWorks Festival. Factory Theatre (125 Bathurst Street). Runs today to January 15, 7:30 p.m., $12-15.
