Scene: Fire Near Dupont and Dundas West

WHERE: 97 Pelham Avenue

WHEN: 11 a.m.

WHAT: Fire officials continue battling a four-alarm blaze that began at 6 a.m. this morning, in a building just northeast of Dupont Street and Dundas West. The building houses Save and Secure Self Storage, so in addition to the property damage, some today are contending with the loss of years’ worth of personal items they have stored on site. Fire officials told us that the building was inspected last year, and that the sprinklers were on in the buildng and appear to have been in working order. The building’s new owners were in the midst of renovations, so while the first floor is largely occupied, the second is largely empty, and the upper floors are about half full. Fire officials say that their main concern now is determining the building’s construction: if the building supports are timber, the immediate danger is that the structure in its entirety will have been significantly compromised. Officials expect to stay on scene well into tomorrow. [UPDATE, 2:36 PM Power has been restored to housing nearby, but those who live close to the blaze aren’t yet able to go home. The fire is mostly but not entirely out—hot spots are still flaring—and internal collapse is still a risk.]
