Scene: Aftermath of the Fire at Save and Secure Self Storage

Building still smouldering, questions about structural stability, two days after four-alarm fire.

WHERE: 97 Pelham Avenue

WHEN: Wednesday, 2 a.m.

WHAT: The state of the building near Dupont and Dundas West is seriously in question two days after a four-alarm fire caused extensive damage and brought dozens of firetrucks to the site early Monday morning. Brooks Restoration has been contracted to remove the top 15 courses of brick from the south side of the building—a first for them, as they’ve never had to conduct emergency work like this while firefighters are still trying to put out a fire. Once that work is complete, structural engineers will decide whether the remainder of the building can be saved. Officials on site told us the building is more than 100 years old, constructed with timber supports (many of which have burnt) and poured concede pads for each floor.

Amazingly this is still a very active train line. While we were on site we saw two very long freight trains roll through, with officers from what appeared to be CN standing by the tracks to guide the trains through.
