Newsstand: January 2, 2012

It's the first Monday of 2012. Welcome to the beginning of the end. Today: the massive cost of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail line, more falling glass at Bay and College (but...this time it's different), the first baby of 2012, what crazy people do on New Years Day (think: hypothermia by choice), and the weather outside is weather.

Mayor Rob Ford seems to be making his own gravy, as it turns out that his decision to move the Eglinton Crosstown light rail line underground has turned it into the most expensive infrastructure project in the country, according to ReNew Canada, an infrastructure magazine. At $8.2-billion, the project is costing the City a pretty penny, but the cute and quirky names of the Tunnel Boring Machines (Holey and Moley, Torkie and Yorkie, Big Becky), totally make it worth the cost. Remember kids, streets are for cars, not (shudder) public transportation.

2011 may have been the year of the falling glass, but one man seemed to have misunderstood that this is in fact a bad thing. The intersection of Bay and College, which has recently been plagued by related glass falling issues, had to be closed after a man smashed out a window using a hammer and chisel. Perhaps he was confused about the whole getting hammered on NYE thing.

Poor baby Ming Shui Lei. Not only will he have to go through life being known as the first baby born in Toronto in 2012, but now everyone knows that he was an accident! This is the kind of thing that really haunts adolescent boys. Good luck dealing with that teen angst, Zhang-Lei family! Lucky for you that’s a pretty cute baby.

Some people like to spend New Years day celebrating a new beginning in jammies with unbrushed teeth and a giant duvet. Others prefer to jump into an icy cold lake. Which one are you? Now think…what does that really tell you about yourself?

Careful out there, it’s set to be the coldest day of the year so far. Too easy? Fine. But seriously, brrrrr.
