Weekend Newsstand: December 17, 2011

Saturday, I would like to go with you, I would like to sail the ocean blue. Saturday, have you treasures in your hold, do you fight with pirates brave and bold? (Answer: Yes!) In today’s tale of swarthy adventure: Down with principals, Connie’s son is angry, sports doctor off the hook, and party bus hooligans attack.

Principals and other authorit-AYE figures, who can trust them these days? (Just kidding, kids—stay in school!) But seriously folks, how about the shady behaviour at Owen Public School? Police have accused former principal Stephan Howard, and former school administrator Androniki Lambiris of stealing $64,000 raised by the parent council and using it for personal expenses. I know school employees have it so rough, with those pesky summers off and all, but is taking it out on the bake sale fund really the answer?

Conrad Black’s son has anger management issues and had pleaded guilty to harassing his ex-girlfriend. After sending her 60 texts on one January day, threatening to “settle the score” after she dumped him, and telling her new boyfriend they were in “total war,” Jonathan Black’s ex was understandably distraught. He was arrested after that, but then contacted her several times one day in March and was arrested again. His lawyer says he’s working out his problems and that he misses his daddy. Meanwhile, J-Black still faces other charges after breaching his release conditions and will be back in court at the end of the month.

Toronto sports doctor Anthony Galea, purveyor of mislabelled drugs to people in this country and the next, has been spared jail time. The doctor to stars like Tie Domi and Tiger Woods had asked his assistant to carry unapproved drugs and human growth hormone into the States. Despite being convicted, the Buffalo judge at his sentencing called him a “healer” and handed out only a suspended sentence, which is sort of like probation. Judge Richard Arcara said he particularly loved all the celebrity endorsements he got to read as part of the case.

And finally, proteck yo’ neck, Richmond Street residents! Lock up your daughters, people of Peter Street! A gang of probably drunk thugs is on the loose and police want to know who they are. The group of men can be seen on video attacking two other men—apparently unprovoked—in the lobby of a condo building on Richmond, just east of Spadina. Then, they did what all roving gangsters do and took off in a party bus.
