Urban Planner: December 28, 2011

In today's Urban Planner: artists duke it out, UFC style, at Art Battle Cage Matches 2; the Barenaked Ladies' Kevin Hearn unveils his second solo work; and the Songwriter Circle takes over the Tranzac.

Art Battle Cage Match 1 took place in September and the second installment happens tonight. Photo by Liz Havenaar.

ART: Two people duke it out in a cage, and after 10 minutes only one will emerge victorious! No, this isn’t another UFC fight in Toronto—it’s Art Battle Cage Matches 2. The live competitive painting event first tried the cage battle format back in September, and fortunately for those who missed it the first time around, it’s back again, with the audience deciding who is the winner of each round. Great Hall (1087 Queen Street West), 7:30 p.m., $15 ($10 for students).

MUSIC: The Barenaked Ladies’ Kevin Hearn is holding a CD release party for his second solo album tonight. His new work, Cloud Maintenance, is about journeys from “wintery wilderness cabins to sunshine-y cities of love, from the clouds at the edge of space to the centre of the mind.” Joining Hearn on stage will be Thinbuckle and Laura Barrett. The Piston (937 Bloor Street West), 8 p.m., $10.

MUSIC: Stop by the Tranzac tonight to see a talented group of singers and songwriters at the Songwriter Circle. Hitting the stage will be John Tielli, Drew Smith, Bob Wiseman, and Magali Meagher to brighten the final days of December with their diverse styles of music. Tranzac (292 Brunswick Avenue), 10 p.m., PWYC.
