Urban Planner: December 22, 2011
In this Urban Planner: check out a free film screening on a Burmese freedom fighter, visit the Great Hall when it lights up with a huge musical bash, and hear soulful tunes from a new local jazz band.
FILM: I Met a Man from Burma, a short documentary on the struggle of a Burmese refugee and freedom fighter, is screening in Toronto tonight, and some of the filmmakers will be on hand for a Q&A. Ler Wah Lobo, the activist whose view the film is told from, will also be in attendance on the panel. Revue Cinema (400 Roncesvalles Avenue), 5 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: Let’s face it, there’s no way you’re going into work tomorrow. Even if you are, here’s a good way to pump yourself up for the Christmas weekend. “The First Annual Great Halliday” promises good times for all in the form of music, music, and more music. Featuring The Girls Can Hear Us, Kid MK, 3 A.M., No Big Deal, and much more. The Great Hall (1087 Queen Street West), 9 p.m., $10 (buy in advance as it will be packed!).
MUSIC: Looking for some jazz-electronic to smooth out your evening? Check out Eden Culture, a band featuring Eden Biggin, a fabulous local musician who is in the midst of prepping a debut album. Several songs are available to listen to on her SoundCloud page and definitely have an easy R&B flow to them. The Port (1179 Dundas Street West), 10 p.m., $4.
