Urban Planner: December 21, 2011
In today's Urban Planner: it's the shortest day of the year, and you can celebrate the winter solstice in Kensington Market; Toronto Masque Theatre presents a holiday cabaret and fundraiser; and Lily Frost takes to the stage at the Dakota Tavern.

SOLSTICE: It’s the shortest day of the year, which is depressing, but it also means we can officially start the countdown to the longest day of the year again! Summer is just around the corner, folks (and by that we mean it’s still six long cold months away). For the 22nd year in a row, you can celebrate the winter solstice at Kensington Market with a participatory lantern parade. Intersection of Oxford Street and Augusta Avenue (Oxford Street and Augusta Avenue), 6:30 p.m., FREE.
PERFORMANCE: Stop by for an evening of words and music with performing arts company the Toronto Masque Theatre. Tonight, the group is presenting A Merry Toronto Masque Theatre Christmas Cabaret and Fundraiser. The event features Larry Beckwith, Derek Boyes, guest singers, and instrumentalists to celebrate the season. Enoch Turner Schoolhouse (6 Trinity Street), 8 p.m., $20.
MUSIC: Lily Frost is returning to the stage in preparation for the release of her new album in 2012. Her 10th album is a follow-up to Viridian Torch, which drew its inspiration from the Canadian wilderness around Frost’s family home on Lake Huron. Frost will be joined onstage by her husband and By Divine Right frontman José Contreras. The Dakota Tavern (249 Ossington Avenue), 9 p.m., FREE.
