Heroes and Villains 2011:
Heroes—Community Activism

Torontoist is ending the year by naming our Heroes and Villains—the very best and very worst people, places, things, and ideas that have influenced the city over the past 12 months.

Today, in heroes: groups of concerned locals who got together to fight the good fight.

City Hall Deputants, for determination in the face of sleep deprivation and disrespect.

CodeBlueTO, for heart and savvy in equal measure.

Foodstock Organizers, for throwing one of the best parties in support of one of the most important causes in southern Ontario.

Occupy Toronto, for establishing a beachhead of resistance during an age of austerity.

From December 12–23, we’ll run through the candidates for Mightiest and Meanest—and new this year, a reader’s write-in option! From December 26–29 you’ll be able to vote for Toronto’s Superhero and Supervillain of the year, and we’ll reveal the results December 30.
