Urban Planner: November 17, 2011

In today's Urban Planner: check out a free percussion concert at the Four Seasons, test your wine-tasting skills at the Gourmet Food and Wine Expo, and see a play that takes an in-depth look at the life of King Edward VIII.

Free concert! Drop by the Four Seasons for a gig from this electrifying band, TorQ Percussion Quartet. Photo courtesy of Maria Lioutaia.

MUSIC: A free concert with performances inspired by electronic music? Yes, please. TorQ Percussion Quartet, a group of young Canadian musicians with a knack for adapting works for percussion, will be performing as part of the Canadian Opera Company’s Free Concert Series. The show, “What To Do ‘Till the Power Comes On,” aims to make traditional music accessible to all generations and geographies. Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts (145 Queen Street West), noon–1 p.m., FREE.

FOOD AND WINE: If Thursday night means pasta again, then you might want to consider this. The 17th annual Gourmet Food & Wine Expo is making its way to Toronto for a convention of samples, samples, and more samples! That’s right, more than 1,500 samples of fine wines, beers, and spirits will be up for grabs as well as tutored tasting sessions that’ll have you sipping wine like a pro. Metro Toronto Convention Centre, South Building (255 Front Street West), today to November 20, $18.

THEATRE: After The King’s Speech won big at last year’s Oscars, there’s been renewed interest in the story of King Edward VIII. Take Crown Matrimonial, for instance—a play that imagines a series of confrontations between the king and his mother, Queen Mary, just before the abdication crisis of 1936 (the 75th anniversary of which is this year). Fairview Public Library Theatre (35 Fairview Mall Drive), today to November 26, $27.50.
