Urban Planner: November 1, 2011
In today's Urban Planner: say hello to November by checking out the International Diaspora Film Festival, attending a party full of circus entertainment for the charity Look Good Feel Better, or catching a dance performance based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.
FILM FEST: The 11th annual International Diaspora Film Festival starts today at 7 p.m. at Innis Town Hall with a talk by Deepa Mehta, followed by a screening of her film Bollywood Hollywood. The festival, which runs until Sunday, has an extensive program of documentaries and dramas that touch on themes such as migration, integration, and diversity. The film fest’s mandate is to “bring new culturally poignant and provocative films to Canadians,” and it features works by filmmakers from around the globe. Carlton Cinemas (20 Carlton Street) and Innis Town Hall (2 Sussex Avenue), times vary, $8–$80.
FUNDRAISER: Look Good Feel Better is a charity organization that holds events and seminars for women diagnosed with cancer to help them gain self-confidence and maintain their self-image as they battle the horrible disease. You can show your support for this good cause by attending The Big Give’s circus-themed evening, complete with gravity-defying aerialists, circus performers, burlesque dancing, and music. The Great Hall (1087 Queen Street West), 7 p.m., $40.
DANCE: The classic story of Orpheus and Eurydice from Greek mythology is re-imagined in dance form starting tonight. Choreographer and director Marie Chouinard’s Orpheus and Eurydice is a titillating take on the story of love and loss, which the New York Times called “a hurricane of unbridled imaginativeness.” The show runs until Saturday. Bluma Appel Theatre (27 Front Street East), 8 p.m., $24–$79.
