Miss Representation
Along with the Jimmy Kimmel clip of crying kids suckered by their parents’ post-Halloween prankery, the trailer for Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s Miss Representation has probably featured prominently among the recent links in your Facebook news feed. On Thursday, December 1, you’ll have the opportunity to like the buzzed-about film in person, courtesy of The Keyhole Sessions and the Royal Cinema.
A call to action in the mode of An Inconvenient Truth, Siebel’s documentary examines the insidious effects of the trivialized portrayals of women in contemporary media, and draws on the insights of actors, academics, news personalities, and politicians, as well as Siebel’s own personal and professional struggles with gender inequality. Miss Representation debuted to positive reviews at Sundance, and while the praise hasn’t been entirely universal, the consensus seems to be that the film is a timely reminder of an issue that is only likely to grow more prevalent as young people consume media at unprecedented rates.
Following the screening, The Keyhole Sessions will host a Q&A, featuring Sonya JF Barnett, Madame of The Keyhole Sessions and Co-founder of SlutWalk Toronto; writer Stacey May Fowles (She’s Shameless, Fear of Fighting); and a third panellist to be confirmed. A limited number of tickets will be available at the box office, and advance tickets can be purchased here.
