- Among the Metro Zoo’s many creatures are African penguins, including two who go by the names of Buddy and Pedro. Buddy and Pedro spend all of their time together, and have been displaying “mating behaviour.” Sadly, the zoo plans to break Buddy and Pedro up soon—not out of any penguin homophobia, but because the species is endangered and our zoo is part of a multi-year, multi-zoo breeding program working to boost the penguin population. Buddy and Pedro, in short, are getting female penguin partners in the hopes that they’ll reproduce. If you want to get to know them better, Buddy and Pedro—being very modern penguins—are now on Twitter, where you can learn all about their favourite music and their slide-offs against the otters.
