Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginning

Remember Wrong Turn starring the incomparable Eliza Dushku, shot just down the road in The Hammer? No? What about Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, made in quote, unquote “The Best Place on Earth” (British Columbia)? Still ringing no bells? How about Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead? Nothing? That’s fair, it was shot in Bulgaria. But Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings must resonate since it was shot at an abandoned mental hospital in Brandon, Manitoba. Looks like it’s not just Toronto that has a panache for attracting genre franchises!

For those unfamiliar with the misguided (pun!) franchise, the premise is that a group of good looking young people take a wrong turn, running into a group of not so friendly hillbillies. Slashing ensues, body parts fly, and things get bloody. Wrong Turn 4 is technically a prequel (with the recent release of The Thing this seems to be well, the thing, these days) shedding light on the origins of the aforementioned killer hillbillies. Leave it to the Underground to give a screening to a straight-to-DVD feature, but if the first three promised anything, it’s that the franchise knows how to enjoy itself. A perfect warm up to the Toronto After Dark festival, which takes over the Underground as of October 20, a wrong turn never felt so right. Or at least so delightfully ridiculous.
