Rue Morgue’s Little Terrors

This might not be for the faint of heart. Rue Morgue, one of the largest horror magazines (and based right here in ye olde Toronto), has being teaming up with Projection Booth and Unstable Ground Productions for an ongoing monthly series, Little Horrors. No, it’s not babysitters club or a movies for mommies screening—it’s a series of well cultivated new horror shorts from local and international directors alike. Though they may be shorts these flicks will certainly scare your pants off (get it?). This series certainly packs a violent punch.

This fourth installment (timely named the Trick or Treat edition) will see the Toronto premiere of Axed, an Australian zombie blood bath that makes The Walking Dead look like A Walk to Remember. There’s also the stunningly beautiful and grim Dance Macabre. Directed by Pedro Pires, the special effects designer on Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe, the short makes death look all too becoming. Most intriguing, however, might be Protection, whose blurb reads: “No description can be provided, or would be apt. An extremely unsettling three minutes.” Fun!

Programmed by local filmmaker Justin McConnell, the series takes its genre screening seriously. Don’t be fooled by the brief run times—you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can be terrified.
